Bone cancer treatment: Sugery

During the surgical intervention the tumour can be removed. The stroked tissue is taken with the health tissue which is near it. The surgical intervention can be of several types:

• Removing of a limb. Sometimes the big tumours or too aggressive cancer cells may be removed only with the whole limb or with the part of the limb. The procedure of amputation is not very popular now because of existing of more effective treatment. After amputation the artificial limb is fitted and patient has to learn how to deal with it and how to do the everyday tasks in easy way.
• Removing of a bone. When cancer is located in a bone only, this bone can be removed careful. The free space can be filled with the bone from another part of the body or with the special prosthesis made from metal. The rehabilitative therapy is obligatory in any case.

Bone cancer treatment: Radiation therapy

Radiation therapy is based on x-rays, which can kill the cancer cells. X-rays are made by a special machine.

Radiation therapy also can stop the increasing of a cancer cells. For this purpose it is usually used with chemotherapy.

Radiation therapy can also reduce the pain. Sometimes this method is used after surgery, to kill cancer cells which still stay in the body. Radiation therapy is the only way for people who are against amputation.

Bone cancer treatment: Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy is based on drugs which can kill the cancer’s cells. Almost all drugs of this type are given intravenously. Sometimes this method is used with radiation therapy before or after surgery. Chemotherapy is the best treatment when cancer cells are already spread in the body.

The stage #1. In this stage the cancer is located only in the bone and cancer’s cells are not aggressive.
The stage #2. The cancer still stays in the bone, but cancer’s cells become aggressive.
The stage #3. The cancer is spread into several places of the same bone.
The stage #4. The cancer has already spread into other parts of the body, such as lungs or brain.

These tests help to examine stroked area of the bone. Doctors usually propose more than one test from this list to make the view from different sides.

• Scan of the bones
• X-ray
• Computerized tomography (CT)
• Positron emission tomography (PET)
• Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)

Taking a part of tissue for testing in laboratory

This procedure is called the biopsy. A small part of tissue is taking from the tumour and sending to lab for analysis. The result of this testing can determinates a type of cancer and weather the tumour is of cancer origin or not. With the help of biopsy, the doctor can prognosticate the aggressiveness of the cancer cells.

The biopsy can be made in different ways:

• With the help of a needle, which inserting into tumour through the skin. Only small pieces of tissue can be removed.
• Surgery removing is making through the incision. This type of biopsy can be excisional or incisional.

The biopsy must be done very careful, with the future possibility to remove the full tumour.

• Different genetic syndromes, such as Rothmund-Thomson syndrome, Li-Fraumeni syndrome, exostoses, which may inherited from other family members.
• Paget’s illness strikes mature persons and make the risk of cancer more obviously.
• Radiation therapy which is used to hill other types of cancer, increases the possibility of bone cancer.

The types of bone cancer are:

• Osteosarcoma starts in bones and strikes as children as young people.
• Chondropsarcoma can begin from the both sides of the bone.
• Ewing’s sarcoma begins in nerve tissue and strikes children and young persons.
